Every week we take one of our band members from Jukebox and put them on the spot about their inspirations, loves and music tastes. Keep checking back each week to keep up to date.
Just a few warm-ups and a cup of tea if possible and I'm good to go! I find I have to make an effort to stay calm before a gig – I love performing, especially with Jukebox, but I also love getting my parts right...
What's your favourite song that Jukebox performs and why?
Probably Gnarls Barkley's 'Crazy'; I think that it's one of the tunes that we make our own – Simon and I get this ultra-chilled disco vibe going, which is fun to just sit back on!
What song would you like to see Jukebox perform?
This Place Hotel (a.k.a. Heartbreak Hotel) – The Jacksons. Any tune that had Nate Watts (of Stevie Wonder's band!) on bass has some serious potential for some bass-face.
If you could work with one musician dead or alive, who would it be? And you can only choose one!
I'd love to work with gospel-man Aaron Spears (regular live drummer with Usher). That man has far too much groove for it to be healthy.
What do you do outside of Jukebox?
In addition to playing for various other function/party bands, I play bass for various singer-songwriters and my own incredibly indulgent prog-rock band back in the Midlands. I'm also an aspiring composer/arranger and have a couple of commissioned pieces in the works!
What's your favourite part of a Wedding?
The whole 'extended family/friends getting together and party-ing' thing. Yeah, that's not so bad.
Suit or Tux for wedding?
Suit. Something offensively garish and flamboyantly coloured.
How would you describe a Jukebox performance?
A force of nature!
In your opinion what's the best thing about Jukebox and how do we differ from your normal function bands?
The band focuses on each gig separately – it's not a case of “Oh here we go, another gig, let's just roll out the same set” as I've seen with other bands; with Jukebox everything is specifically tailored for the next event. New song requests, set orders, even – and here's the good bit – the size and genre of the band!
What are you looking forward to most with Jukebox in 2014?
Doing more of the same. But betterer. And morer.
Which blend are you on these days?
Earl Grey – the blend sold at Chatsworth House, for preference. Really gives you the rhythmic feel for Motown and funk. I went through a phase of drinking Darjeeling pre-gig – I now call them the 'wasted years'. True story!
